The plant pumps more than auxin to the place with the m ost shade causing the plant to be bigger on one side, making the plant wind in the other direction. In 1880 Charles Darwin and his son Francis Darwin discovered that phototropism would not get on with up unless most of the plant was shaded. When they shaded the top of the plant phototropism did not transcend so the plant stood up straight.
